The Vinw Class Light Battleship
“Behind every wall, every fleet, and every world,”
Adjunct Beep’in, 2245.
An outgrowth of the venerable battleships of
the past, the Vinw has become the unsung hero of
the modern T’rintar fleet. Its design follows the
ancient warships of the Yutilians while being
cheap and easy to manufacture. However, its
legacy is one that is quickly neglected as more
powerful warships lie around them.
Design
At the outbreak of the Itrean Civil War in
2339, the T’rintar clan knew that they were in
trouble. Zilik’s Disease had plagued everyone
equally, but the T’rintar were still caught off-
guard. Ships like the Italq had formed the core
battleship fleet for T’rintar. While an effective
and good all-around warship, the Italqs were
slightly expensive to manufacture. They were
good at being produced in sizeable numbers and
served well in the early five years to warrant
improvements and continued production.
However, as the Aksren and Shal’rein clans
continued to step up in producing warships, the
T’rintar knew that they had to step up their
numbers as well. By 2343 to 2344, the Civil War
had fallen into a rut of languished token
campaigns by each of the clans. Various
operations and fleet attacks would be thrown
onto one another in hopes of breaking through
various worlds that had no hope of ever
succeeding. The stalemates had ultimately
created a cold war mentality where each of the
clans hoped to outbuild the other.
The T’rintar were no different. As the Kre
Kingdom had developed and improved upon the
original Dixik Class Battleships, the Getrean and
Gui’optre Kingdoms began working on their own
project of revitalized warship designs. Under a
joint effort, the two kingdoms looked upon the
venerable relics of the Havashri’ye and *Click*
Nat’lin Battleships, two mainstay warships that
formed the heart of both kingdoms. While proven
platforms, ships like the Ikra and future designs
have simply replaced them.
However, both kingdoms still had
manufacturing facilities to be able to mass-
produce these old warships. Any of the facilities
that hadn’t been updated could be reactivated at
any time. It was believed that both kingdoms
could put together a hybrid design that reflected
both of the retired battleships.
What resulted was the Vinw or “Glamorous
Mix” class battleship. The Vinw utilizes 55% of the
Nat’lin design, carrying two protruding port and
starboard forward-mounted torpedo tubes. The
dorsal and ventral midships would introduce the
famous hybrid autogun/light railgun turrets.
While not perfect, these combined turrets would
allow the ship to provide light anti-ship support
fire while being able to adequately take care of
incoming enemy warheads. The forward section
of the hull consists of the Havashri’ye frame.
However, the forward-mounted torpedo tubes
had been gutted out and replaced with the
modern smaller missile launcher array network
utilized in modern warships. Other improvements
in engines and weapons were also incorporated.
Last but not least, two cheap but heavy sensor
packages were installed onto the ship to improve
its scanning radius.
Both kingdoms would participate in
manufacturing the ships. Part of the frame was
manufactured at the Kingdom of Nat, where it is
ultimately shipped to Gui’optre to be fully
assembled. The overall cost of these ships is 30%
less than the Italqs.
History
Production of the Vinw began in late 2343,
with the completed hulls coming out at the start
of 2344. Their goal was simply to remain at home
and protect vital worlds, much like the Aksren
Xetregren or T’rintar Dixiks would perform. It
didn’t take long for many of the defense fleets to
start receiving the warships to help bolster their
numbers. With their introduction, more and more
of the T’rintar Italqs were separated into larger,
hard-hitting mobile defense fleets that could be
used in offensive operations.
The ship shares obvious weaknesses with
the other Itrean warships. Its smaller frame
makes it a poorer combatant. Many UHN analysts
look at the Vinw as “Pocket Battleships” or
“Heavy Cruisers” as they are designed to serve as
supplementary vessels rather than mainline
attack ships. The ship’s interior is still built for
Yutilian standards and not meant for the larger
T’rintar Shal’rein to operate inside. Thus, the
taller Shal’rein are instead sent to operate inside
the Italq warships. However, with the T’rintar
clan, the Yutilians still form the core of the
population, and it isn’t an issue to find crews to
operate these ships. The rigidity of the vessels,
which are weaker than most Itrean battleships,
puts it into a situation where Adjuncts have to
avoid sending them into direct offensive
operations.
However, with all that said, the Vinw has
grown in popularity as a spacefaring battleship.
Much like the ancient Yutilian battleships of the
past, the ships offer a number of unique
advantages. This was proven in the Battle of
Hivi’stiona in late 2344 when two Vinw battleships
were attached to the 56th Nat Fleet due to
insufficient numbers of warships. During the
battle, the main scout ship was sent away for
reconnaissance. Afterward, two Aksren Cloaking
Battleships would try to ambush the T’rintar fleet.
During the fight, one of the cloaked battleships
tried to damage one of the Vinws but only
inflicted minor damage. However, the Vinw’s
advanced sensor package was able to track the
cloaked vessels, and the T’rintar were able to
destroy one while severely damaging the other
into retreat. When the victory was returned, word
spread of the value of the Vinw’s sensor network,
allowing it to serve as a valuable deterrence in
battling cloaked warships. It wouldn’t be
uncommon for a couple of Vinws to be attached
to large T’rintar offensive fleets for their ability to
offer extended sensor radiuses while being able
to take more punishment than the scout ship
counterparts.
As of 2350, the Vinw continues to be built in
moderately large numbers. It’s grown enough in
popularity that a Mark 2 has been introduced,
updating its weapons and including ablative
armor to help protect the bridge sections of the
ship without dramatically increasing the cost of
the ship. For now, the Vinw continues to serve as
the little ship that could, in being able to fight in
T’rintar fleets while saving numerous worlds from
being conquered by invading enemy forces.
