Titan

*Spoilers if you haven't read past Gabatrix: The First Peace arc* “Saturn’s moon still holds a great importance to the solar system. Its secrets remain hidden within. Big or small, it’s the bastion of the outer worlds.” Jessica Akira, the first human to step on Titan. Many worlds were considered to be possible candidates for human colonization. However, Titan was almost shelved as such a candidate, even if the idea of settling on it had existed as far back as the 22nd century, with other discussions going back even further. There were many reasons as to why the location was found suitable. Titan is one of the second to largest moons of the planet Saturn in the Sol System. With most of the outer worlds being that of gas giants, this often forces the moons to become places that humanity can settle on. However, most of the moons are uninhabitable but still feasible as potential mining locations in the future. Any further ventures in the outer planets were stalled after the Gabatrix Experiment had concluded. Suddenly, more viable and resource-rich worlds were within grasp and more straightforward to reach than conducting the ventures to the outer planets of the Sol System. Essentially, folding space simply made Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto less favorable places when other worlds in other solar systems were merely far better. Titan, however, was unique. It was the only moon or location in the entire Sol system to have a suitable atmosphere. The thick levels of nitrogen and methane are the building blocks of life. The pressure there is actually slightly more than on Earth. If it weren’t for the 179-degree Celsius temperatures and lack of oxygen, humanity could easily call the moon home. However, despite the disadvantages, living on Titan, compared to other areas in the solar system, was still considered a more viable possibility. It would actually be the UHN that finally brought forth the concept of having other defensible locations in the Sol System. Titan was one of the first major projects laid down upon the creation of the UHN. Known as Project Twin stars, it would make Titan the “capital” of the outer planets. In 2288, the arguments were pressed forward into turning Titan into a reserve base outpost. In case the military was ever to be compromised on Mars and Luna, then Titan would help serve as the new command base. At the same time, Titan’s thick atmosphere naturally shields the base from outside scans unless the ships get close enough to do so. The go-ahead was made, and within 2290, the first five slot ship facility was completed. Hyugen Colony Base would then be established within a couple of years afterward. The capital city of Hyugen is little more than a centripetal spinning base. During the established times to sleep, colonists rest in this spinning ring to help out with the low gravity. It’s very similar to Luna’s conditions. Its true purpose is to help staff and military family members live in the world. The ship storage facility would be expanded even further within another ten years. The ultimate goal of Titan is to store older obsolete warships and serve as a repair and replenishment platform for outer planetary patrols. While this has been implemented rather well, the colony has had its share of issues. In 2320, a political movement was created that encouraged the population present to become a member of the UWA. The UHN, at the time, voiced strong opposition to the idea, stating that doing so would compromise UHN security. Titan was intended to be a “secret outpost.” Rules forbade the construction of a gate array, fearing that outside alien incursions might be able to trace and destroy the Hyugen colony if Sol were to be invaded. In 2321, a hearing announced that UWA laws came first on this matter, especially since Luna (a moon) had already been a colony member since the formation of the UWA. However, the UHN still partially mattered in issues of security. Titan should have the same rights and privileges as the citizens that lived there. The moon base would become a member of the UWA in 2322. However, the rules still extend that a gate array can’t be built until a much larger population persists in warranting such construction. Titan is fully self-sustainable, including the production of water and plants, per rules of the colony establishment. It has access to large amounts of nitrogen and methane, the building blocks of life. Many of the Titanians have had high praise for their world despite the cold temperatures and dark illumination. However, rules still pertain to Titan. For the people that come there, most of the time, unless a military serviceman is transferred to somewhere else, they have to use travel visas to leave the colony. Titanians have to live under a “secrecy clearance.” In reality, you can’t identify yourself as one to the general public. Titanians have often identified themselves as “The other Luna Base,” as a makeshift callsign of where they truly come from. The exact location of Hyugen base is on a “need to know” basis where the general area is kept hidden to most public and UWAN sources. This has generally not been too much of an issue as the Titan population is so small as it is.  By 2348, Titan has maintained its position as a research base, light home, and military storage compound. Up to five old warships and two research ships have been stored there. The UHN Michio Kaku and UHN Tyson research vessels have called Titan their main operational hub in studying the other planets and moons of the outer planets. However, much of Titan’s knowledge to the general public has grown more and more, but its true purpose still remains.
