The Coalition of Deities consists of many
wondrous creatures and characters that fill their
ranks. Among one of them is that who calls herself
Qing, but who is she? What does she contribute to
a world filled with mythical characters?
The Qilin are one of the more well-known
creatures in China. Sometimes they are known as
the Chinese Unicorn, a creature of myth and
fantasy. Their descriptions abound. Sometimes
they are known to be horse-like and have horns.
Others see them as scaly horses with antlers.
Some even see them having a dragon’s head with a
horse like body. They are described as having
magical powers and can sometimes actually guard,
heal, or help people in times of need. The Qilin are
generally regarded as one of the more innocent
creatures, but there is always speculation of what
they represent.
In Japan, the Qilin are called the Kirin, and
sometimes they are described as having one horn,
but they are sometimes depicted as having two.
Anytime a person who ended up seeing a Qilin
would see a great sage or ruler be born or die. In
most respects, the Qilin is considered to be a luck
of fortune if one ever sees them. It is believed that
the inspirations of the Qilin go as far back as the
great Chinese explorer Zheng He that during his
voyages would bring back an animal that no one in
the Ming Dynasty had ever seen. What he brought
was a giraffe. Since then, statues began to appear
of the creature, and it would eventually evolve
into the Qilins that we see in modern-day art.
In Tales of Heroes, the Qilin very much exist
but in different forms. Not all Qilin are precisely
alike. Some have scales, and some don’t. Some
have two antlers, while others have one. In 1927 a
Chinese soldier by the name of Peizhi would serve
in Chiang Kai-Shek’s growing anti-communist
movement. The time periods were not easy for the
Chinese. Communists or anti-communist, lines
were drawn, and fellow Chinese would fight
Chinese. Brutal tactics were used on one another.
1927 would mark the Great White Purge, where
Peizhi would be forced to participate in a massacre
of Chinese that were supposed, Communists.
Disheartened, he would leave the area and try to
live as far from the conflict as possible.
Fortune would smile on Peizhi when he would
meet a woman that would call herself Qing. She is
kind and considerate to him. They spend time
together and get to know one another. Eventually,
they would date and date more often. The day
arrives. Qing has a gift for him, but she tells him to
meet her in the forest. It is here that she reveals
herself to be a Qilin in human disguise. A magical
healer and bringer of luck, Peizhi would have to
accept that the woman that she loves is one of the
mythical creatures of lore. Of course, it is no issue
for him. They fall in love and get married later on.
Peizhi has found his peace away from the conflict
and war.
