Opet (NSFW)
If one thing is for sure, in the stories of
Egyptian mythology there is the hippo goddess
known as Opet but who is she and what is she?
There are many different sources on Opet. In
modern mythology and studies, Opet or Apet as
she is known as, is considered to be Taweret
herself. There is much confusion on the study and
mulitple iterations of the hippo goddess that it is
very well possible that many different groups in
Egypt simply had Taweret under different names
and had the same idea of her. Taweret is already
mentioned earlier as a childbearing goddess, a
fertility goddess, and a protector to motherhood.
Another source on Opet is that she is the
mother of Osiris but other sources counter that
argument as most sources now look at Nut as the
mother of Osiris. It is possible that some cults and
religious groups did look at Opet as the mother
instead of Nut though. It goes on to say that the
Temple of Khonsu would worship the hippo
goddess very much like Taweret. It isn't to say that
Opet is the only hippo goddess. There are often
other references to hippo deities including Ahti,
Metni, Reret, and more. Unfortunately with
studies and the loss of history not much can be
provided on Opet and sadly it seems that Opet has
simply gotten swallowed up and merged to
Taweret. The question though remains if Opet
really was her own goddess or not.
In Tales of Heroes, the answer is rather
interesting. The fact is nobody is truly correct.
Opet is one of three known children of Taweret
and the last survivor from the three as well after
Cataclysm wiped out most of the deities. Opet was
considered by many, the best child of the three
and ironically was the one child not fathered by
Apep, Taweret's former husband. Not many liked
Metni as he antagonized other people and caused
problems. Ahti was another issue entirely since
she was spiteful and many also had problems with
her appearance as well. Taweret to this day
defends her kin by saying that Apep had truly
belittled and mistreated her son and daughter for
them to become what they did in the end. Taweret
was heartbroken and even felt discouraged in
becoming a mother again after her husband was
gone. A few deities had gone to defend the hippo
goddess to protect her name and give her a chance
among the other the deities. Eventually as the
thousands of years passed, Taweret one day finally
felt like becoming a mother again. She met an
Egyptian mortal that she befriended, loved, and
ultimately had a relationship with. Even though
the mortal life was a short one, Taweret would
discover or rediscover her power that being
pregnant made her more powerful. She prolonged
the pregnancy to help others with her powers
before she finally gave birth to Opet hundreds of
years later. Opet looks almost like her mother
with some differences here and there. She is a foot
shorter than her mother and she prefers to have
her hair tied together and hanging down one side.
Her gray skin tone is darker than her mother and
she lacks the tattoo as well. However with all that
being said, Opet is very much like her mother and
even has the same powers as her mother but in a
slightly reduced fashion. She even has the same
crocodile like tail just as her mother does. It is not
surprising that many scholars can get Opet and
Taweret confused so easily from one another.
Wouldn't you agree?
Opet had served a quiet life compared to her
mother. She did have children of her own off and
on throughout the next thousand years. With the
coming of the 16th century and the arrival of
Cataclysm, Opet was already in a middle of a
relationship with an Egyptian human mortal
named Kanra and even announced that she was
pregnant with his child. Things came crashing
down though once it was discovered that
Cataclysm was closing in on Earth. In the middle of
her own pregnancy, she refused to go to battle
knowing that her demise would result in the death
of herself and her child. She instead prolonged her
pregnancy as far as she could and put herself into
a deep sleep along with several other Egyptian
deities. When she awoke four hundred years later,
she had learned that Cataclysm was wiped out but
at a great cost. She expected the battle to be
completed in less than a year and instead found
herself awoken hundreds of years later after
Kanra had long passed away. It had a dramatic
effect on her. She wasn't the type to prolong her
pregnancies and she wanted to be a mother with
the mortal that she loved. Kanra would never get
the chance to see his unborn child.
Regardless, time heals all wounds even for
the mythics. Opet personality wise was very
similar to her mother. She enjoys life to the fullest
and embraces everything around her. She decided
to go ahead and prolong her pregnancy in hopes of
finding another mortal that would be willing to
become a father. She refused to raise the child
alone until she found a suitable husband.
Eventually, Opet would get this chance in
Woodstock of 1969. Regarded as a major event
even to the mythics, many participated in their
human forms to cherish the event in which free
love, peace, and protest towards the Vietnam War
occured. Many enjoyed the event and Opet was the
perfect reflection of the mortal's personalities
there. She would meet a human mortal by the
name of Steven, a hippie that believed in the same
things she did. Things went well and the two got to
know each other. Shortly afterward, Opet had
made her decision and told Steven the truth that
she was a hippo goddess in disguise. Steven had no
issue with Opet's true appearance and agreed to
marry and help raise her child.
Steven and Opet that is still pregnant, enjoy a
romantic night together.
It wasn't much longer before Opet would give
birth to her son. As a form of tradition among
some mythics, Opet would name her son Metni to
honor her long deceased half brother. Much to the
joy of Taweret to see herself become a
grandmother, her daughter would continue to
have children of her own.
Opet would never join the Coalition of
Deities. She believed in a life of peace and love. She
wanted to raise her child and her future children in
peace. Instead she served in the Non-Aligned
Movement that was devoted to living a life away
from conflict and war, being the mother that she
wanted to be.
There are always the advantages to being the
husband to a mythic. Steven wouldn't have to
worry about living a poor life. Opet still had a vast
amount of money given to her by her mother and
as a result Steven never had to worry much except
just be a father. Opet would have two daughters
and another son with Steven as they lived in the
forests together. Even though she was not in the
Coalition, it didn't mean that she wouldn't lend her
power every once and awhile to help somebody.
She would also help babysit children for other
deities when they went on long missions. Opet
would enjoy a life of peace, love, and simplicity
with the people that she loved and cared for.
All thanks to Taweret, a lasting legacy of the
great hippo goddess. Opet would help continue the
trend of her future offspring in turn in keeping the
unique line of hippo deities going as humanity
progresses into the 21st century and beyond.
