The Gorgon Sisters (NSFW)
The Gorgons are a word that never surmises
that of just one individual. It consists of many. But
who are the Gorgon sisters, and what did they
contribute to mythology?
The story of Medusa is one that is often told
many times in history and mythology. It is usually
a tragic tale of gods and what they can do to their
subjects, but one of the more exciting aspects is
that Medusa was not alone.
Medusa was the daughter of the god Phorcys
and his sister Ceto (others claim it to be Echidna
and Typhon). The original story of Medusa is that
of a woman that was raped by the god Poseidon in
Athena's temple. Athena was angry at the event,
though. The fair beauty of Medusa to enrapture
Poseidon to commit such an act was more than
enough to infuriate the great goddess. Athena
would then transform Medusa into a hideous
creature with snakes for hair and a look that could
turn a man into stone. The hero Perseus would be
sent on a mission to go and behead Medusa to use
her head as a weapon.
Often the story circulates her and not her
sisters. This is often unfair for the myth as it
usually leaves the other women seemingly
forgotten as if they never existed at all. Of course,
it is a matter of who is telling the tale. In reality,
Medusa actually had two sisters with her by the
name of Stheno and Euryale. These two sisters
were with her when Athena enacted her revenge.
Athena would transform all three of the sisters
into what many interpret them now.
In the Medusa tale, Stheno and Euryale were
both immortal, and Medusa was not. This alone
was the main reason why Perseus went after
Medusa since she was vulnerable. When the hero
beheaded Medusa, her sisters tried to kill Perseus,
but he used the cap of Hades to make himself
invisible to make his escape. Both Stheno and
Euryale wept for their fallen sister, and the tale
often ends on the two and their fate.
The Gorgon sisters have been described as
many different variants. One variant was just ugly
and ghastly women. Another variant portrayed
women with snakes for hair. Another variant even
described the Gorgon sisters as grotesque winged
snake-like creatures, almost as if they were
harpies. The original artwork surprisingly shows
Medusa as a woman with two legs instead of being
snake-like. The most popular current rendition is
that of a snake woman with snakes for hair.
In Tales of Heroes, the Gorgon Sisters are very
much alive and serve as one of the many members
of the Coalition of Deities. Being one of the few
living Greek Deities, Euryale and Stheno often
serve together and travel together to protect one
another against the ravages of history. Often at
times, the process is simple, especially with the
ability to take up human form. For the Coalition,
information is always essential and gathering it
can be easy and straightforward to do. Where one
may have a hard time gathering information
alone, being paired together is a sure means of
acquiring that information. Men that get caught
up by the Gorgon Sisters are entrapped by the two.
Revealing what they know to them always works.
They actually have three forms that they can take
now from being human, human with snakes for
hair, or their snake-like form with snakes for hair.
For Euryale and Stheno, the memory and
tragedy of their fallen sister is something that
looms in their minds. Distrust in the gods is a
common theme, and they were much harder to
convince to join the Coalition, to begin with.
Thankfully, the many members of the Coalition
ensure that they have others to trust. Many of
those that brought harm to them is gone now
thanks to the destructive creature named
Cataclysm. When offered to be turned back to
normal, the sisters instead refused the offer
saying that they enjoy their forms, for it tells
others of who they are.
For both the sisters they often retain the
same powers that their sister had. The ability to
turn mortals into stone is an ability that they
have, but it is an optional ability. Perhaps if you
find yourself ensnared by the Gorgons, it is best to
give them what they want. Euryale and Stheno are
accommodating people, and they are sure to
provide a welcoming time if you are willing to
provide them with what they want…..
