Carmilla The concept of vampires is a fascinating one. Throughout the world, there are numerous accounts of creatures that can suck the life out of somebody or drink blood to satiate their desires. Surprisingly though, cultures all around the globe have their own aspects of what a vampire is and what they can do. The general consensus is that vampires are generally bat like, have enormous strength, have various other abilities, can make more of themselves, and can't travel at night. In Tales of Heroes, Vampires are just like the mythics and are considered mythics themselves. The concept is that there are many types of vampires and they can't be entirely narrowed down to one category. The vampiric curse (that being able to bite and pass the curse onto another) doesn't exist as well as it should. Among one of the more well known vampires besides Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) and Lilith, is a lesser known vampire named Carmilla. The original story of her and interestingly written before the famous story of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Carmilla is referenced in the book The Dark Blue as far back as 1872. The story of Carmilla actually not only helped introduce the first concepts of modern vampirism into literature but actually introduced other concepts as well including even homosexuality. In the story of Carmilla, a young woman by the name of Laura ends of befriending a woman by the name of Carmilla. The two end up becoming close but there is a catch to the story. As Laura ends up learning more and more of Carmilla, she ends up discovering that the townsfolk are having women and children dying. Laura would discover the portraits of Carmilla and recognize that her own friend was by the name of Mircalla or also named Mircalla, Countess Karnstein. She would live forever continually changing her name in the process. With the help of a woodsman and other characters they would stop Carmilla by staking her in the heart, beheading her, and then destroying her body. Laura would be traumatized by the recent event knowing the friend closest to her was a vampire. It is ironic how this story would help pave the way that Vampire novels in the future would continue this trend of vampirism that we know today. Of course in Tales of Heroes, it goes further then this. The question is, how did Mircalla came to be? What were her origins? Why did she become the vampire to be? Mircalla/Carmilla.....whatever her name is would be the first true experiment by Lilith to create or pass the vampiric curse to another. Vampirism in some stories and even Tales of Heroes, is something that can't be simply spread by biting an individual. Even Werewolves also have a similar struggle with this as well. For characters like Lilith, she must be able to perform a unique ritual that Devil himself had to personally teach her to achieve it. The idea is that Lilith would have to bite the individual and completely drain the body of blood. The next action was that the body had to be buried in a unique ground or sand. A ceremony must then be completed as well with the vampire standing over it to finally achieve the transferal of the curse. Lilith actually had a volunteer by a woman that had a personal attraction to her. Even as a monster, Carmilla wanted to follow Lilith to the ends of the Earth. Carmilla would walk the Earth as a vampire for the rest of her known life as she continued on through the Golden Age of Vampires during Vlad the Impaler's reign. For Lilith, Carmilla was always close to her. Lilith was partially bisexual and willing to receive the affection that Carmilla had towards her, but it was obvious that Lilith had more of an attraction towards men. This often created friction for the pair of vampiresses and it was something that Lilith could only do so much to reciprocate her friend's wishes. Lilith would do as much as she could but after the end of Vlad the Impaler's reign, so eventually ended the relationship that Lilith and Carmilla had for each other. Both would go separate ways and try to live their own lives apart. The Golden Age of Vampires would come to an end as other historical events would continue on around the world. Carmilla is considered to be a Romanian type Vampire. The characteristics of her include (in her true form) having bat like wings, gray to whitish like skin tone, dark hair, yellowish eyes, fangs for teeth, lack of reflection, and other various abilities. Vampires just like any other mythic, were needed to help fill the ranks for the Coalition of Deities against Cataclysm. Cataclysm cared none for what it could consume but eventually it was defeated. With the help of magic, even blood cravings could be quelled and vampires would be forgiven of their past transgressions assuming they would not use their powers to harm human mortals in the future. Sadly, Carmilla, remains at large. She was never in the Coalition of Deities to begin with and she did her best to avoid any contact with other mythics. Her history would make her a rouge mythic that would occasionally haunt and attack women. The sporadic chase to find her would warrant no results. The Vampiress was seemingly hard to find and could never be caught. The question remains......did she really die in that story with Laura? Is she still alive out there, changing her name and finding other women to be with and to feed?..... In the picture you see, vampires like Carmilla, cannot create a reflection. This means that even with the development of photography, nobody can take a picture of Carmilla. This often forces individuals to make sketches, portraits, or paintings of her to catch her true form. Rarely does she peer to the artwork knowing what she truly looks like and what could have been a wonderful relationship with the vampiress that she longed to be with for the rest of her life.....
