Baihu (NSFW)
When it comes to Chinese mythology, there is
often stories that radiate about the character
named BaiHu, but who is he, and what importance
does he play in the realm of gods?
In Chinese mythology, there exist the four
symbols of the Chinese constellations. These
constellations consist of four sacred animals
known well as the White Tiger, the Black Tortoise,
the Azure Dragon, and the Vermillion Bird (Father
of all birds). These four magnificent animals and
the constellations that they represent depict the
four seasons that we experience.
Baihu is known by many names. In China, he
is referred to as Baihu, but in Korea, he is known
as Baekho, and Japan as Byakko. He is the great
white tiger and represents the season of Autumn.
Known as the guardian of the West, the white tiger
is the king of beasts and would only appear if the
emperor was virtuous. Of the five elements of
China, the white tiger represented the aspect of
metal.
In Tales of Heroes, Baihu is one of the four
divine animals of China (this is not to be confused
with the Wudaxian or the five great immortals).
The four sacred animals all survived the great
destroyer known as Cataclysm that would wipe
out most of the mythics on Earth and are members
of the unity of gods known as the Coalition of
Deities. They annually have the "Divine Meetings,"
where they gather the four divine animals to
discuss anything essential or missions assigned by
the Coalition. The sacred four are lead by the
Vermillion Bird himself known as Fenghuang, the
father of all birds, and husband to Simurgh. Baihu
is a regular and, despite being fierce, is known to
be relatively friendly to everyone. He, like the
legends that make describe him, tends to serve as
a protective character and guardian to those he is
assigned to.
Baihu often serves in the Coalition of Deities
in the best possible manner. He is usually sent on
missions where fighting occurs in China, Japan,
Korea, and the other neighboring nations. These
missions are generally to search out mystical
artifacts such as the Lintarsha Shards, legendary
weapons or items, or rogue mythics that are
meant to bring harm to human mortals.
Among one of Baihu's missions was going to
the Chinese/Vietnam border in 1979. The so-called
Sino-Vietnamese War was a short war between
both nations. Vietnam had their veterans after
their long fight against the United States, but
China had sheer numbers and resources to throw
at the Vietnamese. Baihu was sent to the border
under his human disguise to search for any rogue
mythics that might be using the fighting itself to
bring harm to human mortals. It is essential to
understand that the Coalition of Deities does not
take sides in a war unless there is an absolute
apparent reason to do so. Instead, the Coalition
serves as a police force to enforce its own rules
and ensures that mortals have their destiny
without the direct interference from the mythics.
It was during the conflict that Baihu would
meet a Vietnamese soldier by the name of Phoung.
It was not uncommon during the Vietnam War that
Vietnamese women were turned into soldiers. This
made them the perfect guerilla fighters as most
men wouldn't even know that they had combat
skills until it was too late. The unsung fighters
were quite skilled at fighting, and Phoung was the
character that believed in fighting for her
homeland. That was, of course, until she met
Baihu. The two seemingly met each other, and the
two fell in love. Baihu would reveal to her that he
was none other than one of the divine animals and
that he was on patrol in the shifting warzone.
Phuong had learned then and there that the world
was much bigger than she thought. She fell in love
with the great tiger, and they became good friends
and mates.
Phuong had grown tired from war but not
disheartened. While she considered herself to be
Vietnamese, she wanted to help serve the
Coalition. It is not surprising that the Coalition of
Deities does consist of human mortals. Some may
simply be the lovers to the mythics, but others do
far more than that. Phoung had years of
experience in fighting in jungle warfare and
espionage. Principally Phoung would be
remembered as the Daiyu (another well-known
human of the Coalition) of the 21st century. She
would help train the children of many of the
mythics in the ways of combat (Including the Yuki
rats). This form of training would help push the
deities and mythics to veer away from using
legendary swords and melee weapons. In turn,
mystically made long-range weapons such as
firearms or guns were created that gave the
mythics the ability to fight just as well as human
mortals could without the need of magic.
Baihu would, of course, do his best to always
remain by Phoung's side. After a day of training,
the two enjoy a romantic evening in the forest
together.
